The year is 2002. The world is a very different place compared to today. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube don’t exist yet. Google is the UK’s 2nd most popular search engine and the future Octopus Marketing Manager is sporting a manly ponytail and goatee combo (no, it wasn’t fashionable back then either).
When our founders; Paul, Nigel and Chris launched Octopus the concept of Software as a Service (SaaS) was in its infancy. Octopus was among the first true on-demand HR software providers in the world.
Was pioneering SaaS for HR the easy option? Definitely not. Would it have been easier to do what everyone else was doing? Absolutely. But having worked for some of the largest and most innovative software companies in the world, and with a strong background in the HR services field we could see the potential for SaaS to deliver accessible, flexible HR software at a low cost to SME’s.
10 years later we’re still privately owned, still based in the UK and still retain the innovative edge and passion to exceed our client expectations that made our name ten years ago. Oh, and David, our marketing manager, has had a shave and a haircut.

We understand that this goes way beyond just getting a deal signed and regularly include client’s suggestions in our product development. Who are our Clients?
We’ve built a loyal client base ranging in size from 50 to over 2,000 employees across a diverse set of industries, you can download a sample client list here. Most of our clients have their head office located in the UK but, because we have the ability to deliver our HR system for clients anywhere in the world, many of our customers also have an international presence.
